Stanford Graduate School of Education Dean Dan Schwartz was recognized by state and local leaders for his service to education during his more than 10 years leading the school.
At an event last month, Schwartz received two commendations – one from U.S. Congressman Sam Liccardo and another from California Rep. Marc Berman and Sen. Josh Becker – honoring his commitment to learning and teaching, and for fostering community partnerships.
“Your service in higher education demonstrates an immeasurable commitment to equity, student learning, and the professional development of teachers,” read the Certificate of Recognition from Berman and Becker.
Schwartz, who will step down as dean on Sept. 1, was honored in Liccardo’s Congressional Resolution for “leaving a lasting legacy of advancing real-world change through research, exemplified by his collaboration with local school districts and the creation of the Stanford Accelerator for Learning.”
During his tenure as dean, which began in 2015, Schwartz launched new partnerships with districts in San Mateo and Santa Clara counties to conduct research on areas of shared interest that improve academic outcomes for all students. He also started the Stanford Accelerator for Learning to help bridge research and practice, and get evidence-based learning solutions into the hands of learners more quickly.
Stanford President Jon Levin and Provost Jenny Martinez also attended the May 28th event, dubbed a “GSE Block Party” celebrating the end of the academic year – the first year in the school’s refurbished campus.
“I’m so excited to be here celebrating the GSE’s extraordinary year and this new space, as well as Dan’s last year as dean,” Martinez said before she encouraged the crowd to raise their glasses in a toast.
Festivities took place in the Penner Education Courtyard and included a taco truck and boba bar. A DJ mixed songs, one faculty-led band choreographed a sing-along, and another played jazz hits.
