Language & Literature - Using Students’ Funds of Feeling to Build Textual Interpretation

Synchronous Online | Summer 2026 | $950

In this Stanford Professional Learning Extension (PLEX) experience, participants will learn an accessible, authentic approach to textual interpretation called “funds of feeling.” With this approach, students start the process of interpretation by drawing on their positive and negative emotional responses to texts. By the end, participants will be able to identify the underlying processes of literary interpretation; teach flexible approaches to help students develop connotations, symbolic meaning, themes, aesthetic evaluations, and reading through critical lenses; build prompts that give students reasons to argue about textual effects; and know how to respond when students offer interpretations that seem unsupported by texts. This course will be offered three times this Summer. Participants can earn 1 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) with their full participation.
