Stanford Graduate School of Education kicks off new academic year in remodeled space
Fences are down, and spirits are high. After three years of construction, the newly remodeled Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE) opened its doors at the start of fall quarter, welcoming the community to new spaces filled with natural light.
The comprehensive project marked a significant consolidation of the school and included renovations of the historic Education Building, now named the Angela Nomellini & Ken Olivier Building (ANKO), and the Barnum Center, as well as the addition of a new four-story facility named the Patricia & Jeffrey Raikes (Raikes) Building.
"We are at the heart of Stanford, and for the first time in one place," said Dan Schwartz, the I.James Quillen Dean of the GSE, in an email to the community. "The spaces are designed to support the three C’s of collaboration, connection, and convening. I look forward to seeing how we use the spaces; how our community culture evolves; how the rest of the university is drawn to the heart of educational scholarship; and what possibilities start here."
During the first two weeks of the quarter, students, staff, and faculty familiarized themselves with the new classrooms and study spaces while moving into offices and laboratories. The school also hosted a festive all-community picnic. A formal dedication will occur later this quarter. Throughout the year, the GSE will open its doors to the off-campus community, offering professional development opportunities for teachers, discussions on critical topics in education, and research workshops.
