Biography

Dr. Monica Ellwood-Lowe is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate School of Education. Monica completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology from UC Berkeley and her postdoctoral training at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research journey started at Stanford, as an undergraduate researcher and then post-baccalaureate lab coordinator, where she began asking questions about children’s language and brain development that continue to drive her work today. Monica studies how the structure of society shapes caregiving and early child development. She is fascinated by the remarkable flexibility of caregiving, language practices, and brain development, even under severe constraints. Monica has won awards from the American Psychological Association, the Society for Language Development, and the Cognitive Development Society, and her work has been supported by diverse funding sources including the National Science Foundation, the Psychology and Economics of Poverty branch of the UC Berkeley Center for Effective Global Action, and the Greater Good Science Center.
