Dear GSE Alumni,

This month, campus is buzzing with excitement and celebration. We hosted our second annual Career Pathways dinner, which brought together alumni from the ’70s to those from our most recent Class of ’24. With commencement on the horizon, we’re excited to welcome a new class of graduates to the GSE alumni community, and we are reminded of the transformative moments that mark the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next.

The month of May is also celebratory because it commemorates Teacher Appreciation Week, recognizing the educators who make lasting impressions on our lives and the education ecosphere. Did you know Stanford Teacher Education Program (STEP) grads stay in the profession almost twice the national rate? One of our feature stories below highlights the varied and important work STEP alumni do. Thank you, teachers!

In the continued spirit of celebration, you are cordially invited to join us at the Bay Area GSE Open Minds Cocktail Reception on Friday, June 6. Hosted from 7‒9 pm at the Tonga Room at the Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco, this event offers a night of conversation and networking in the city as a preview to the wider university Open Minds event happening in San Francisco on June 7. Register here or at the link below.

As always, this newsletter highlights professional development opportunities to support your ongoing growth and success. Whether you’re looking to explore a new field, mentor a student, or reconnect with classmates, there’s never been a better time to tap into the strength of our alumni community.

Thank you for being a valued member of the GSE alumni family. I hope to celebrate with you in person soon at one of our events in the Bay Area or beyond!

- Marly

April’s Connector posed the following Game Changer:

Q: What group invites a national celebration each year in the first week of May?

A: Teachers! The Stanford Teacher Education Program was founded in 1959 and has an alumni community spanning seven decades. Many STEP grads spend their entire professional careers in the classroom, while others share their expertise elsewhere within education. One of this month’s feature stories is about the impact our STEPies have year after year. Well done, teachers. We appreciate you!

Congratulations to April’s Game Changer winner! Keep reading to find May’s Game Changer and your next shot at GSE swag.

Teaching the Youcubed Summer Camp

This workshop focuses on our curriculum and teaching approach that improved students’ scores on standardized mathematics tests by an average of 50% (equivalent to 2.8 years of school). A study of teachers implementing the program across the United States showed a significant increase in student mathematics achievement after camp and during the following school year. The training is appropriate for anyone interested in running a youcubed-inspired summer camp or using this teaching approach during the school year, and it includes our camp curriculum for grades K‒1, 2‒3, 4‒5, and 6‒9.    Find out more →
