Dear GSE Alumni,

The clocks have changed, the days are longer, and signs of new growth are all around us. Spring has arrived on the Stanford campus, and growth has never been more evident at the GSE than it is right now. With the new campus due to open later this year, the buzz of anticipation heightens as the building walls are painted, the furnishings chosen, and moving plans are drafted. I started contemplating what a milestone this is in the history of the school while reading one of this month’s feature stories about the Barnum Center. This 119-year-old building was once the campus bookstore, a library, a career development center, and an office space for staff at the GSE. What a difference time can make.

On the topic of making history, March 31 is the final day to make your nominations for the 2025 Alumni Excellence in Education Awards (AEEA). Growth doesn’t happen without our educators, so consider nominating peers from your program, someone from your professional network, an alum who made an impact on your community or the community of others, or someone whose work illustrates the GSE mission of Improving lives through learning.

This is the time to elevate our educators, celebrate their radiance, and show how brightly they shine! I hope you will take a moment or two and submit a nomination.

Best,
Marly

“The biggest way I try to be a powerful teacher is in making sure I help create an environment for students, with their input, that allows them to push themselves and doesn’t require me.”

Meet 2024 Alumni Excellence in Education Award (AEEA) honoree and lifelong educator Marisol Castillo ’03, MA ’04, who has spent half of her life sticking to a decision she made when she was 14: to become a teacher who uplifts and enriches students. As someone who intends on spending the rest of her career in the classroom, she’s added the goal of encouraging others to do the same. The impetus for her career in education, she says, was the recognition that despite attending a “failing” high school, she had a positive academic experience.
