Cubberley 2024

Dear GSE Alumni,

We are thrilled to announce that the nomination period for the 2025 Alumni Excellence in Education Award (AEEA) has concluded and we received a record-breaking number of nominations this year! Our Alumni Award Nominating Committee (AANC) is hard at work reviewing nominations. As I was preparing their materials for review, I came to truly appreciate the dedication and commitment of our committee members for the time they spend to ensure each nomination receives thorough inquiry and exploration. I want to give them all a special shout-out—for without their efforts we wouldn't be able to hold an awards ceremony this fall.

In addition, a HUGE heartfelt thank-you to everyone who submitted nominations. It is a big lift, and your contributions are very much appreciated by our alums and everyone here at the GSE. Together, we lay the groundwork to recognize and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our alumni.

Mark your calendars, because the award recipients will be revealed this summer! We hope you’re as excited as we are about our Reunion Homecoming from October 16‒19, 2025. The 2025 Alumni Excellence in Education Award ceremony will take place on Friday, October 17, from 5:30‒7:30 p.m. It promises to be a night of celebration and inspiration.

But that’s not all—more exciting programming is on the horizon! Next month, don’t miss the Cubberley Lecture Series, featuring a live recording of the popular podcast School's In with hosts Denise Pope and Dan Schwartz, alongside their special guest Sam Wineburg, professor emeritus and cofounder of the Digital Inquiry Group. Dive into the topic of "Digital Literacy in the AI Era: A Young Person’s Guide to the Internet"—you won’t want to miss this insightful discussion!

Happy Easter to those who celebrate, and I wish everyone a beautiful spring.

Best,

Marly

March’s Connector posed the following Game Changer:

Q: This alum was awarded the Early Career Award at the 2020 Excellence in Education Awards (AEEA) for research and scholarly work that supported public schools in San Francisco. Who was it?

A: Laura Wentworth, MA ’06, PhD ’10. Laura is the director of the Research Practice Partnership Program at California Education Partners, a nonprofit supporting collaboration between universities and school districts to improve student outcomes. She is the founding director of the Stanford-San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) Partnership, which has led to hundreds of research projects supporting the spread of ethnic studies courses nationwide, state-level bilingual education policies, and increased graduation rates in the Bay Area, especially for African American and Latinx students. In 2016, Laura oversaw the launch of the Stanford-Sequoia K‒12 Research Collaborative, which was recognized last month with a public service and community partnerships award detailed in the announcements below. Congratulations, Laura!

… and congratulations are also due to March’s Game Changer winner, Tina Cheuk, MA '07 Edu, PHD '19 Edu! Keep reading to find April’s Game Changer and your next shot at GSE swag.
